Who We Are

Kate Viana

Founder & Principal, Nontoxic Nonprofits

Nice to meet you! I am…

Helping Nonprofits Build Stronger, Healthier Cultures

Nonprofits exist to serve communities, but what happens when the internal culture of a nonprofit is struggling? Miscommunication, leadership misalignment, and workplace tension can derail even the most mission-driven organization.

I know this because I’ve lived it – across dozens of missions.

For nearly 15 years, I’ve worked in nonprofit communications, leadership and governance. I’ve seen brilliant, passionate teams struggle – not because they lacked commitment to the mission, but because internal communication was broken, expectations were unclear, and leadership wasn’t aligned

That’s why I started Nontoxic Nonprofits. My mission is simple: to help nonprofits eliminate the communication breakdowns and cultural barriers that keep them from thriving.

My Approach

Observation First, Strategy Second

Nonprofits often misdiagnose their own challenges. That’s why I don’t jump straight into solutions – instead, I observe your organization’s culture for 2–4 weeks before developing a strategy that actually works.

Practical, Actionable Solutions

I don’t believe in vague advice. I work with leadership, staff, and teams to develop clear, structured communication strategies that reduce friction, boost morale, and drive mission success.

A Mission-First Mindset

A thriving nonprofit culture doesn’t mean ignoring hard truths – it means building trust, setting clear expectations, and ensuring that every staff member feels valued and heard. When communication is strong, the mission can thrive.

“Working with Kate is like a dream come true. She truly listens to everything you say, and takes it all into consideration when making an action plan for your organization. She answers all questions and offers suggestions based on your needs, while bringing her professional insights to keep your organization’s mission at the forefront. Couldn’t recommend her highly enough!”
